Margins

A Bakery Owner’s Guide to Packaging Costs & Margins

Packaging is a real line item, not a rounding error. Priced right, a custom box costs cents and lifts the perceived value of what is inside. Priced wrong, it quietly eats margin on every order.

Here is how to think about box cost, work it into your prices, and protect your margin over time.

What a box actually costs

At our minimum, custom bakery boxes run roughly $0.60 to $3.50 per unit depending on size, stock, and print. A small kraft cookie box sits near the low end; a tall coated cake box with full-color print sits near the high end. That per-unit figure is your packaging cost of goods for each sale.

Price the box into the product

The simplest method is to add the box cost to your product cost, then apply your normal markup. On a $28 cake, a $1.50 box is a small share and disappears into a healthy margin. On a $3 cookie, a $0.70 box matters more, so make sure the retail price carries it.

Product Box cost Retail price Box as % of price
Single cookie box $0.70 $4.00 ~18%
Half-dozen cupcakes $1.60 $18.00 ~9%
8″ cake $1.80 $32.00 ~6%
Cake, gift window box $2.80 $45.00 ~6%

How bulk lowers your unit cost

Print cost per box falls as quantity rises, because setup is spread across more units. A larger run, or combining several sizes into one order, moves your per-unit cost toward the low end of the range. That is the single biggest lever on packaging margin.

Reorders protect margin

Your artwork stays on file, so reorders skip the design and setup steps. That keeps repeat runs efficient and predictable. Order in windows that match your volume so you always buy at a bulk-friendly quantity rather than topping up in small, expensive batches.

Choosing for your order

Treat the box as a known cost per sale, add it before your markup, and buy in quantities that keep the unit price low. Higher-ticket items easily absorb a premium box; low-ticket items need a lean box or a retail price that carries it.

Key takeaway

Custom bakery boxes run about $0.60 to $3.50 per unit. Add the box cost before your markup, buy in bulk to push the unit price down, and use on-file reorders to keep repeat runs efficient. Premium boxes belong on higher-ticket items.
